Solutions Festival | Community Action Project Presentation on New Voices in Writing

At the Solutions Festival, participants of School for Social Transformation (SST) 8.0 continued to share community-driven ideas shaped through reflection and lived experience. The next presentation was by Ameena Sherin, who introduced her Community Action Project titled “The Right to Write – Empowering New Voices.”

About the Project

Ameena’s project emerged from her close observation of aspiring writers in her community who possess strong ideas and creativity but lack access to publishing spaces and guidance. While many young people are eager to write, limited awareness about platforms, mentorship, and opportunities often leaves their voices unheard.

This gap prevents emerging writers from building confidence, developing their skills, and reaching wider audiences. As a result, stories that deserve to be told remain unseen, and potential contributors to the literary world are left behind.

The Proposed Solution

The project proposes creating safe, inclusive, and accessible spaces for new writers. Ameena outlined plans to form local writing circles, conduct regular workshops, and connect beginners with experienced writers through mentorship.

By organising monthly meetups, peer-review sessions, and short-term guidance programmes, the initiative aims to help writers refine their craft, understand publishing pathways, and express themselves with confidence. The project also envisions compiling and publishing selected works, giving new writers their first tangible platform.

Why It Matters

This presentation highlighted how freedom of expression becomes meaningful only when people have real opportunities to use it. Ameena’s project connects the constitutional right to free speech with everyday creative practice, ensuring that writing is not limited to a privileged few.

It reminded the audience that unheard voices are not absent because of lack of talent, but because of lack of access.

A Step Forward

As part of the Solutions Festival, this presentation stood as a commitment to nurturing creativity at the grassroots. By building supportive networks for new writers, the project lays the foundation for confidence, inclusion, and a stronger local literary culture one where every voice has the right to be heard.
