Solutions Festival | Community Action Project Presentation on Community Health & Well-being
At the Solutions Festival, participants of School for Social Transformation (SST) 8.0 continued to present community-driven ideas rooted in lived realities. The next presentation was by Fathima Ruman who introduced her Community Action Project titled “Prevention of Non-communicable Diseases.”
About the Project
Ruman’s project is inspired by Thrikkalangod, a village known for its strong support for sports, especially football, and its active engagement in social development. The community places great emphasis on education and health and is recognised for its low infant mortality rate.
Despite these strengths, the village is witnessing a steady rise in non-communicable diseases driven by modern lifestyles and unhealthy food habits. High medical costs often discourage timely treatment, while lack of health awareness, peer pressure, and mental health challenges further deepen the problem. These factors affect not only physical well-being but also emotional resilience and quality of life.
The Proposed Solution
The project proposes a holistic approach centred on the idea of a healthy mind and body. Ruman outlined key interventions such as promoting regular health check-ups, creating personalised diet plans, and conducting awareness sessions in collaboration with Primary Health Centres and schools.
By integrating health education into everyday community spaces, the initiative aims to make preventive care accessible and relatable. It encourages people to take ownership of their well-being while building a culture that values mental and physical health equally.
Why It Matters
This presentation highlighted how lifestyle-related illnesses are no longer individual concerns, they are community challenges. Rumi’s project reframes health as a shared responsibility, reminding us that awareness, early intervention, and supportive environments can prevent long-term harm.
It reinforces the idea that true development includes the ability of people to live healthy, balanced lives.
A Step Forward
As part of the Solutions Festival, this presentation stood as a commitment to nurturing healthier communities from within. By combining awareness, prevention, and personalised care, the project lays the foundation for a future where well-being becomes a collective practice, ensuring that communities like Thrikkalangod continue to thrive in both body and spirit.
