"Creating Changemakers by Empowering Youth to Lead"

From a young age, Naji Mahfood has been driven by a desire to make the world a better place, one community at a time. Growing up in Malappuram, Kerala, Naji was exposed to the challenges that many in underserved communities face, and he knew early on that he wanted to contribute to creating solutions. Over the years, this determination evolved into a passion for designing transformative learning experiences and building social enterprises that empower others to become changemakers.

šŸ”†Empowering Youth through Experiential Learning

Najiā€™s journey into social entrepreneurship began in 2016, when he co-founded Ignite India. What started as an idea discussed in a hostel room has now grown into an organization that helps young people across India develop leadership skills and engage in social impact work. Ignite India offers capacity-building programs, workshops, and leadership journeys designed to turn passionate individuals into capable social leaders. Through Ignite India, Naji has impacted the lives of thousands of young people, providing them with the tools and support they need to take initiative and drive change in their communities.

"Ignite India is about building a generation of young leaders who are not only aware of the challenges around them but are equipped to solve them."

From Volunteerism to Social Innovation

Najiā€™s early experiences as a volunteer laid the foundation for his work today. From volunteering at the Kozhikode Medical College, where he assisted patients and saw firsthand the power of service, to working with international organizations like Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) in Bangladesh, Naji has always sought to learn from and contribute to the communities he serves.

Through these experiences, Naji developed a deep understanding of the systemic issues that hinder progress, and he realized that true change requires a combination of grassroots action and systemic transformation. This insight has shaped his approach to social impact, focusing on long-term, sustainable solutions that empower individuals and communities.

šŸ“–Learning, Unlearning, and Re-learning

Naji is a strong advocate for lifelong learning, believing that true growth comes from constantly questioning, exploring, and adapting. This philosophy inspired the creation of the Thattukada Un-Conferencing Space (TUCS) during the COVID-19 lockdown. TUCS is a community space where learning, unlearning, and re-learning happen through diverse discussions, workshops, and listening circles.

Naji also embraces the power of experiential learning, having traveled to 28 states in India and several countries, including Nepal and Bangladesh. His travels have allowed him to learn from various communities, shifting his perspective on development and enriching his approach to leadership and education.

Creating Change Beyond Borders

Najiā€™s work has extended beyond Indiaā€™s borders, through collaborations with international organizations such as UNESCO APCEIU, ChangemakerXchange, and Pravah International Citizen Service. His participation in the 8th Youth Leadership Workshop on GCED connected him with youth leaders from around the world, further broadening his understanding of global issues and enhancing his ability to create impactful programs.

A Changemaker's Advice

"Change doesnā€™t happen overnight, and itā€™s not something you can do alone. Surround yourself with people who share your vision, be patient with the process, and always stay open to learning."

Najiā€™s advice to aspiring changemakers is rooted in his own experience. He emphasizes the importance of starting small but thinking big. By addressing local problems with passion and resilience, anyone can make a significant impact.

šŸ¤”Whatā€™s Next?

Looking to the future, Naji aims to scale Ignite Indiaā€™s impact by expanding its Global Citizenship Education curriculum across more regions of India. He is also focused on creating more community-driven learning centers that provide access to education and leadership development for underserved populations.

"My goal is to empower as many young people as possible to become changemakers in their own right. With the right support and opportunities, I believe anyone can lead the way to a better future."

šŸ”ŽNaji Mahfood - Q&A Interview

Background and Early Childhood

I grew up in Malappuram, Kerala, where I was surrounded by a strong sense of community and helping others. From a young age, I was taught the importance of compassion and giving back, which instilled in me a deep commitment to social causes. Volunteering and traveling opened my eyes to the broader world, and these experiences were pivotal in shaping my values and vision.

Personal Transformation

What triggered your transition to become a change leader? Was there a specific event or realization that set you on this path?

A major turning point happened with me when I volunteered at the Kozhikode Medical College during my college years. Witnessing the impact of limited resources on patient care and being directly involved in helping others sparked something within me. It gave me a sense of purpose, and I realized that I wanted to do more than just volunteerā€”I wanted to create lasting change. This desire to contribute more significantly to society led me to co-found social impact initiative, The Ignite Foundation with my team; which was targetted towards nurturing social leaders and changemakers.

Focus Area and Region

What specific problems did you encounter that led you to focus on this area?

During my early volunteer experiences, I encountered systemic issues like caste discrimination, gender inequality, and the lack of access to quality education in rural areas. These challenges highlighted the need for leadership and social impact work in these regions.

Why did you choose this particular focus area and region for your work?

I chose to focus on education, social entrepreneurship, and global citizenship because I believe these areas are crucial for empowering young people to create change. Kerala, my home state, and other regions in India were natural starting points due to the immediate needs I observed and the potential for impactful interventions.

Instances

Can you share an example of one of your favorite case studies from your work?

One of my favorite success stories is about a participant from an underserved community who joined our three-month experiential learning journey. During this period, he traveled through seven states in India and engaged with 12 grassroots organizations, gaining exposure to various education models. This transformative experience inspired him to launch his own initiative, focusing on providing access to quality education for street children using theatre as a powerful tool. After completing the program, he spent over seven months meticulously preparing for the launch of his initiative, while also participating in an international leadership program he connected with during the debrief of our journey. Today, he is fully dedicated to his initiative, using his newfound skills and experiences to make a meaningful impact on the lives of children in need. His story is a testament to the power of experiential learning and the lasting change it can inspire.

What is a significant achievement or milestone in your journey as a change leader?

One of the top priority plan is to build an incubation space for change leaders.
